Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a 72,000-seat, multipurpose venue in Atlanta featuring a first-of-its-kind retractable roof comprised of eight 1,600-ton panels. As part of a joint venture, AECOM Hunt served as the construction manager. They faced technical and coordination challenges in building adjacent to existing infrastructure, compounded by the sheer size and unique structural features of the venue. To meet the project schedule and budget, they needed an integrated construction simulation and visualization solution.

AECOM Hunt selected SYNCHRO 4D to handle 28 3D structural models representing 6,000 megabytes of data, generating a 320-megabyte model that was updated weekly. The team used Bentley’s application to manage and communicate the 15,000 line-item schedule across multiple construction teams. Through 4D construction scheduling, simulation, and visualization, they achieved a safety milestone of 1 million working hours with only one lost-time injury while meeting the opening day schedule. The digital twin solution helped avoid construction changes, delivering the world’s first LEED platinum certified sports stadium.
