To update the existing electrical and high-voltage asset information on Anglia Railway, Arcadis was tasked with assessing the electrical infrastructure along 420 miles of track. They found the information to be out of date, leading to several health and safety incidents. Arcadis needed to propose solutions and provide a BIM masterplan and schedule that would ensure safe working conditions and rail reliability. However, they realized that traditional, paper-based methods were insufficient for the project’s size and timeline.

Arcadis used OpenBuildings Designer, MicroStation, and ProjectWise to create a seamless project information management system. Engineers could easily check and approve data, reducing the time that the client spent searching for information by 10% and improving client engagement. They streamlined both schedule production and design approval, cutting the design time in half. Project management efficiencies improved by 150%, allowing the team to exceed all client expectations while providing additional value for future stages.

Traffic volumes across the United Kingdom have grown to over 4 million vehicles a day. However, road investment has not increased to meet the demand, resulting in increased congestion, noise, and poor air quality across the road network. To help provide a better network with smarter roads, National Highways realized that they needed to provide more information about how they generated savings, how they progressed through construction, and how they delivered their projects.

After considering their options, they chose BCDE to develop a common data environment and project template to help roll out complex regional infrastructure projects. Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute implemented a study to use digital twins for lifecycle asset management of hydropower projects. They wanted to generate 3D digital models for two giant power stations and standardize asset coding, data collection, and archiving. However, they had to integrate various contractors’ disconnected systems, as well as overcome the volume of assets and short project timeline. Recognizing that traditional modeling strategies were ineffective, they sought an integrated modeling solution.

They selected Bentley’s open modeling applications, including MicroStation and OpenBuildings Designer, as well as ProjectWise, to improve multidiscipline model coordination, saving 200 resource days in modeling time. The models helped to avoid rework, reducing the construction period by 5%. They used ContextCapture and the Bentley iTwin platform for reality modeling and generated a digital twin of the two stations, integrating and linking engineering and asset data in different formats.

Serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) manages a large amount of data. Working from two separate data sources, they struggled with data repetition without a single source of truth. Additionally, they had strict, elaborate security workflows, making it difficult to collaborate with vendors and ESPs. To streamline their project creation and collaboration, they sought a connected data environment.

PG&E turned to a cloud-hosted ProjectWise environment to improve how they work. They spent months discussing, reworking, and modifying their system to create a platform that allowed all users to access and collaborate on projects. Reducing rework and eliminating the time wasted waiting for file transfers, PG&E’s vendors can use the system while automatically following company standards and workflows. In southwest China, ChinaSoft Century Technology helped construct the largest indirect coal liquefaction project in the world, producing 4 million tons of oil annually. They were responsible for the overall design, including utilities, auxiliary facilities, and off-site works. A major milestone for China’s industry, the project was complex and involved sharing many documents across multiple offices. To guarantee the success of this project, they needed a document management system that could issue documents in a timely, accurate manner.

After considering their options, ChinaSoft Century Technology chose ProjectWise as the basis for their project documentation management system. The application allowed them to standardize document and directory storage structure, controlling document access and versions while delivering design results. National Highways is tasked with designing, building, operating, and maintaining the strategic road network in England. Recently, they needed to increase lane capacity as part of the Smart Motorways Initiative, which will deliver GBP 4.5 billion to 7 billion of road improvements over the next 10 years. However, to complete this complex project, the team required managing information to improve productivity and quality and reduce safety risks, costs, and time.

After considering their options, National Highways chose BCDE to create its Business Information Framework (BIF). It allowed the team to make sense of the data within their systems using an intuitive interface, as well as share the information among disciplines and stakeholders. Making the data more accessible improved efficiency and data reliability while also reducing road disruptions, design hours, and repeating tasks. The team estimates GBP 70 million savings by providing open access and re-use of data assets for better decision-making and construction efficiency.

As one of the largest sanitation companies in the world in terms of population served, Sabesp needed a way to automate online measurements to control their project costs in a safe and transparent way. To create this system, they needed to digitalize the entire measurement process of their projects, making the entire process more agile, practical, and traceable. They sought software that would allow them to remotely control and confirm measurements in the system itself.

Sabesp chose ProjectWise to import a standard bid spreadsheet containing important information that would be used to automatically create project measurements. They used ProjectWise’s customizations to adapt the system based on customer needs, automating the internal flow of measurements to help analyze, approve, and control the project remotely. Sabesp expects to save 54,000 resource hours and have the ability to provide transparent, secure, and organized financial information in the event of an audit.

Over the past eight years, Welspun Enterprises Ltd. (WEL) has conducted several projects for the National Highway Authority of India. When they began the USD 30 million Mubarka Chouk Panipat Road Project (MCPRP) in early 2020, however, they realized that previous manual ways of working would not be sufficient. They needed to deliver an 80-kilometer road within 15 months, requiring digitalized workflows and a single source of truth.

WEL chose Bentley applications to digitalize construction processes and create lookahead indicators by integrating hinderances to the schedule. They created paperless information flow from field data collection to invoicing, as well as automated dashboards and report generation. The solution has been rolled out to other projects, with WEL seeing USD 55 million of value billed and 40,000 inspection checklists raised and approved. They have trained 150 users and conducted about 125 meetings, which has helped reduce the billing cycle process for subcontractors by
a week.

The Nagaa Hammadi Elsenaia project will stretch across 250,000 square meters and include three buildings that provide 500 kilovolts, 220 kilovolts, and 66 kilovolts of energy, respectively, to the surrounding cities and urban areas. PGESCo was tasked with designing the entire plant systems. They also had to manage the project’s construction, start-up, and commissioning. They needed a system that would help them manage project data and enable collaboration to deliver the project on time and budget.

Already familiar with Bentley applications, PGESCo chose MicroStation to draw, edit, and issue all CAD drawings. ProjectWise helped them manage, share, and search for 642 documents, including 331 correspondences and 298 drawings, within a single platform to streamline design and approval. With STAAD, they designed foundations, concrete buildings, and steel members in a safe and economical way, saving over 50% in analysis time and providing an easy-to-use 3D interface.

Spain-based TYPSA Group is an engineering consulting firm that has worked on world-recognized infrastructure projects, including the Stockholm Metro and the United Kingdom’s HS2 railway line.
