Known for their spectacular beauty, coral reefs are a vital component of ocean life. Yet, threats such as climate change and damage from marine construction can kill them or cause them to lose their color. Entire coral reefs can be saved by relocating them, though it requires long-term observation to monitor their health. GHD joined a project to determine how relocated corals in the Persian Gulf could be monitored without needing to send highly trained environmental experts to manually assess them.

GHD learned that they could use ContextCapture to create a 3D model of the coral reef and its surroundings to monitor the project remotely. The process allows any team member to capture images and update the model, regardless of skill level. The application helped them create a striking 360-degree time lapse visualization of the coral, which was shared with stakeholders. As a result, stakeholders can measure the success of the coral relocation, as well as raise awareness of the importance of coral mitigation measures.
