Due to increased economic and agricultural activities, including the rampant use of borewells, the water table in Tamil Nadu has declined to 100 feet from ground level. To continue supplying water to more than 1 million people, Larsen & Toubro sought to design pump houses and hydraulic networks to move irrigation water to more than 1,000 reservoirs while keeping water pressure consistent. Since the network is 120 kilometers long and 45 kilometers wide, they had to find a way to overcome several complex issues.
Larsen & Toubro realized that they could overcome the difficulties with OpenFlows applications. As they surveyed the real-world network conditions, they used the application to quickly update the network model. Next, they selected the optimal pipe sizes and determined how to group outlets to maintain steady water pressure. Additionally, scenario management options helped them detect and correct errors, saving significant time.
