The water system for the Planalto district provides water to 28,290 people but has one of the highest water loss rates in the entire city. Water system owners wanted to greatly reduce the loss; however, not only were the pipes too deteriorated to patch, but many losses came from unknown sources. Enorsul was tasked with addressing the problems but soon discovered that the registry for much of the system was missing or outdated by 15 years.
Enorsul determined that OpenFlows WaterGEMS could help evaluate the current state of the water system and pinpoint the causes of the water loss. They undertook a hydraulic analysis of the entire system, including 175 kilometers of supply networks and 5,000 consumption nodes. They revealed problems caused by an unneeded booster-pressurized supply area, as well as a leak in a crossing enclosed in a viaduct. The analysis helped them determine how to reduce water loss by 47%, over twice the target of 23%.
